To really make a difference this month, remember to look for the Non-GMO Project Verified Seal on products. The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that was founded on the principal that people should have access to clearly-labeled non-GMO food and products. To that end, they developed North America’s only independent verification for products made according to best practices for GMO avoidance. The Non-GMO Project verification is an assurance that a product has been produced according to consensus-based best practices for GMO avoidance including:
- Ongoing testing of all at-risk ingredients — any ingredient being grown commercially in GMO form must be tested prior to use in a verified product.
- Rigorous traceability and segregation practices to ensure ingredient integrity through to the finished product.
- An annual audit and onsite inspections for high-risk products.
This is a really important Non-GMO Month for NestFresh because it is the first year that your favorite NestFresh Eggs are now Non-GMO Project Verified!
As with all NestFresh Eggs, our Non-GMO Project Verified Free Range Eggs are produced on small family farms that are committed to the land and animals under their care. These farms follow animal welfare standards in addition to the Non-GMO Project standards.
The hens that produce the Non-GMO Project Verified Free Range Eggs are cage free and free range which means that not only are they free to roam around large barns, they also have access to the outdoors. Each hen enjoys a minimum of 2 square feet of outdoor space to forage, roam, and enjoy the sunlight. While inside the barn, they also have perches, nestboxes, and woodchips for dustbathing, ensuring that the hens’ natural behaviors are not only allowed but encouraged. Our farming communities also grow and mill their own non-GMO feed. These crops are free from pesticides, GMO contamination, and harmful chemicals.
You can also find the same great Non-GMO Verified eggs under the Nature Fed label, available exclusively at Whole Foods.
